GABION WALLS

Constructing a rock filled gabion basket wall along a waterway is an ideal solution for preventing soil or beach erosion. Since gabions can be stacked, they are suitable for steep banks and channel linings. They conform to ground movement and are permeable, that allows water to drain freely and prevents the buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind them. The rock filled baskets with a layer of a porous geo-textile fabric allows water to flow freely through the rocks while keeping the soil in place. Plus it helps to dissipate water flow energy since the gaps between the rocks trap and slow the flow of water.

Gabion mattresses are considered an alternate to rip rap and offer long term performance against aggressive flow conditions. The basic purpose of gabion mattresses is to help in preventing river scouring  and erosion. They also prevent the undermining of gabion retaining structures and can act as a foundation for the gabions to be built on.
