WIRE MESH PANELS FOR DIY GABION PROJECTS

The standard corrosive resistant coating for gabions is “Pre-Galvanized” (GBW) steel wire. It consists of plain carbon steel which has been coated with a layer of Zinc during the wire drawing process. 

  PVC coated wire mesh panels are widely used as gabions for protective applications.  According to ASTM G-23, the protective coating must be resistant to the destructive effects of immersion in acidic, salt, or polluted water, exposure to ultraviolet light and abrasion 

Compared to plain steel, weathering steel contains a chemical composition that increases its resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Made to rust under the influence of weather, weathering steel develops a patina that acts as a protective layer to prevent corrosion of the steel. This material is suited for many applications in its unpainted condition. With time and consistent exposure to the elements, the weathering steel will go from a yellow-orange, to a deep rust orange color, to a dark brown.

 Shown here is a simple, flat wire architectural woven DECO-WIRE mesh pattern with a gentle smooth shape. This mesh lends itself well for architectural gabions and trellises.  It can be woven in a wide range of square or diamond patterns and remains a classic design spanning both traditional and modern aesthetics. This architectural wire mesh is available in Galvanized Steel, Plain & Weathered Steel, Stainless Steel, Brass, Bronze and a number of plated finishes.

• Class 3 galvanizing is our standard gabion wire finish in accordance with ASTM specs. It provides a strong, long lasting zinc coating. The zinc coating is applied at 0.80 onces per sq ft and has an expected life of 13-30 years

• PRO-TEC™  9 Gauge Gabions Materials Fabrication In accordance with ASTM A974. PRO-TEC™ Gabions are manufactured with all panels mechanically connected at the factory. They are supplied in collapsed form and stacked in bundles for easy job site assembly. Where the length of the gabion exceeds the width, the length is divided equally into cells using diaphragm panels so that each cell is no greater than one cubic yard. Each PRO-TEC™  gabion is supplied with enough accessories - helical spirals, temporary fasteners, lacing wire, and preformed stiffeners  to completely assemble and install, with minimal tools required. 

 Galfan gabions are made of Galfan coated steel wire mesh 

in accordance with ASTM A856M.  A corrosion resistant coating consisting of a zinc base followed by a 7.2% zinc/aluminum alloy that offers better corrosion and abrasion resistance for gabions in a corrosive environment. Performance is superior to gabions made of galvanized or PVC coated steel wires. They are widely used for channel linings and coastal applications and come in welded wire versions with a variety of wire thicknesses and mesh openings. 

• Note ...  Galfan gabions are slightly higher in cost than galvanized gabions, but offer 2-3 times the service life and  corrosion resistance of galvanized gabions
